The so-called 'Visor de ODF' (ODF-viewer) can be installed on any mobile phone that has Java installed, says Manuel García-Cervigón Gutiérrez, software developer at Semarket, a software company in the city of Barcelona that was awarded the project by Cenatic.
Almost everybody uses a mobile phone, and the devices have become powerful enough to be used for more than just a device for voice communication, Cenetatic said in a statement. The organisation hopes other Open Source developers will help to improve the capabilities of the application. "This proof of concept can serve as the basis for a community of developers and users on mobile Open Source applications."

The beta version can at the moment only display ODF-text files (ODT). "We have another 800 hours to extend the viewer. We expect that by December we can also display ODF presentations and ODF spreadsheets", says Gutiérrez. The application was made with Java's micro edition J2ME and uses Open Source software tools Kxml and Lwuit. The applications uses a simple file browser to locate the ODF files, and then displays them taking into account the display size of the mobile phone.
What software licence the Visor de ODF will be published under, has not yet been decided. Gutiérrez: "The choice depends on the licences of the libraries we used to develop this application. Someone is looking into it, and we will know soon."
Visor de ODF's beta version was published on Monday during the Open Source World conference taking place in the city of Malaga, Spain.
